Make Art That Sells - Happy Holidays
Remember I joined the Make Art That Sells course with Lilla Rogers last spring? I'm now taking part B. Another five weeks cover five different markets: paper goods, baby apparel, scrapbooking, editorial and party paper
I just had my first week: paper goods. Here's the result.of the first assignment: a winter holidays postcard featuring penguins:
First we got the mini assignment to loosen up, trying different techniques and get to know the subject. So I was diving into the world of the penguins. I love these animals, their clumsiness is funny. I never saw a baby penguin before, they are so cute. I would love to see them in real.
Baby penguins where not the only ones I drew. I also made these red cheeks variations:
Below more experiments, now I added some more color:
I also discovered this new technique. I drew lines with a sharpie, scanned them in, reversed the black lines into white ones and added the colors with some monoprint brushes I created. I like the effect, I think I'm gonna try this technique more often:
After all these penguin drawings we had to create a winter holiday postcard. The assignment was open. Only thing given was the subject and the size. It needed to be a portrait format. Funny I had several ideas which would fit better in a landscape format...
My challenge was to add a lot of 'icons'. To make a kind of winter holidays collection and still try to keep it organized. Would you buy a card like this?
Next week we gonna take a look at the baby apparel market. I'm already curious!

Muscle Man Paper Doll now also in English!
I have a house full of Muscle Man Paper Dolls! He was sold out, but...
I've ordered a whole bunch of new ones :-)
I've chaged two little things: the text is handwritten. And I'm happy to say he's now also available in English: 'be strong': And ofcourse also 'with the Dutch word: 'sterkte!

moustache twins: product of the week!
A nice surprise when I openend the Dawanda newsletter today:
My moustache twins postcard is product of the week. :-)
Dawanda is an inspiring place where you can buy nice things and gifts.
I recently opened a shop to sell my Red Cheeks Factory products.
I still want to add more products, but it's already a start.
Dawanda focusses on the Dutch market, but I also translated my shop into German..
(I often have to laugh when I see these translations. German is a funny language :-))
And ofcourse I also translated it into English.

happy bird-day, dear Jan!
My favorite brother (lievelingsbroer in dutch) has his birthday today!
(Yes the one where I always make fun trips with to Musea and nature)
I made a special postcard for him.
He likes green, he loves nature, he is friend with the birds
and he also enjoys cake :))

Handsome Herbert postcard
Lately I'm experimenting with all kind of materials.
I work with papmaché, clay, collage, glue, pencils, ink...
It's fun and it brings new ideas, I even experimented with hair.
It resulted in Handsome Herbert, an original collage postcard with REAL breasthair :-))

Fairytale cardboxes of Sara Fanelli
The postman just brought a very nice package:
Two fairytale cardboxes of one of my favorite illustrators: Sara Fanelli.
One Cinderella box and one of Pinokkio.
Both 18 cards which make six illustrations together
Also a little booklet and stamps, all in these nice little boxes.
Last week I was looking for them.
I saw they were available in the library of Rotterdam.
But you can't borrow them, they save them in a special collection.
I asked if I could see them and that was possible.
Two ladies of the library and a security guard walked with me to a special room.
It was locked. I had to wait outside, the cards became more and more special
and mysterious in this way. They brought me the box of Cinderella
and kept waiting while I was looking. So I had a very quick look
and the cards were locked up again.
That evening I found the cards on Markplaats, a Dutch second hand market on internet.
And now I have these 'secret cards' in my home :-)

postcard rack
I'm preparing myself for an exhibition coming weekend.
It's in my own hometown, even in my own neighboorhood.
I will write about it later this week...
There's also a small Art Market on Sunday, where I will sell my giclée art prints.
I'm also gonna sell Red Cheeks Factory postcards.
Today I found a postcard rack, where all my A6 postcards fit in.
I always wanted to have such a rack, and now I have one :-)
For the dutch readers of my blog:

(of all places ;-))
